H20 ROWHEDGE A WIN TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH

Colchester and District Table Tennis League Division One leaders H20 Rowhedge A beat a spirited St Mary’s A 6-4 in a closely fought match. No player remained unbeaten on the night with both the West Bergholt teams Men’s Champion and Runner-up Greg Green and Gary Young both losing their unbeaten record. Antony Greenwood accounted for Green in a very tight encounter; 10-12, 12-10, 1-11, 11-9, 9-11. In an incredible fight back from 8-1 down in the first end, Mark Mulley beat Young in three straight sets. However, Green beat Mulley and Young beat Greenwood and the pivotal Doubles saw St Mary’s squander two match points, eventually going down 11-6 in the fifth. Gt Horkesley A took full advantage of this result, taking second place, seven points behind Rowhedge with a game in hand. They were 10-0 winners over Walton C, despite John Hobson’s best efforts unluckily losing all three of his games in five sets. Walton share the bottom spot with a winless H20 Rowhedge C who also went down by the maximum margin to their ‘B’ team who move up to fourth. John Andrews, Dave Moss and Kevin Gowlett were the unbeaten trio. Walton B are fifth despite losing to sixth placed Rayne 6-4 in another close match with no-one winning all of their games, as five went the full distance. Walton were on the right side of similar scoreline with Gt Horkesley B, for whom Mark Lewis made a rare Colchester appearance, making his mark with an excellent maximum.

Walton D are racing away with Division Two following a big 9-1 win over Lawford B however, they suffered their first defeat at the hands of last seasons promotion rivals Gt Horkesley C. Wuidong Liu was their star winning his three, whilst John Hobson and Essex top 10 ranked under 15 junior James Denyer starred, unbeaten for Walton in their win over Lawford. Gt Horkesley, without Liu slipped up against a resurgent Pegasus A who recorded their first win, 6-4. Steve Noble once again led the way winning all his games in straight sets. Andrew Harvey scored an excellent maximum, his first in this division, joined by Alan Burgess in a 7-3 win over Clairmont that included Paul Tracey. Another youngster, Toby Turner was on good form as Pegasus B like their A team won their first match, 7-3 to move into mid-table.

Division Three leaders Tollesbury A played out a 5-5 draw with St Mary’s B, with that man Roger Clark still undefeated this season, beating John Sorrell bizarrely 11-0 in the fifth end! Walton E join Tollesbury B in second place following a 5-5 draw with Pegasus C as no single player dominated. H20 Rowhedge F subjected their ‘E’ team to the bottom with a 6-4 victory, Nigel Claydon once again making his presence felt, undefeated. George Berry maintained his one hundred percent record for Dedham who held Gt Horkesley E to a 5-5 draw. Pegasus C overcame their ‘D’ team 6-4 courtesy of maximums from Dave Haslam and Paul Woolnough.

H20 Rowhedge G gave themselves clear water in Division Four, hammering St Mary’s C 10-0. Sam Burrows is in excellent form as he has reeled off twelve straight wins that included three more against Lawford D in an 8-2 win. Lawford C are second as they beat CRGS 9-1 with the University of Essex third, drawing 5-5. Lawford move up to share that spot after hammering H20 Rowhedge H 10-0. There were 7-3 wins for Walton E and Lawford E against Gt Horkesley D and E respectively.
