PEGASUS DOMINATE DIVISION THREE

With three teams in Division Three of the Colchester & District Table Tennis League from Pegasus it is no surprise that their ‘A’ and ‘B’ team are filling the top two spots both with three wins out of three. The ‘A’ team had a comfortable 10-0 win over their ‘C’ team. Pete Mills, Paul Woolnough and Steve Noble were on top form as their team recorded back to back maximum wins while the ‘B’ team are just four points behind following two more wins, the first 7-3 against Lawford B, the second one better in beating Tollesbury B 8-2. Dave Haslam and Doug Green won three apiece, Haslam in the first match and Green in the second. Clairmont are third as they retained their unbeaten record, Lawford B this time earning a 5-5 draw. Mark Nowers was the thorn in Clairmont’s side winning his three in emphatic style.

CRGS A head Division Four with three straight wins, Simon Smith-Dye maintaining his one hundred percent record in a 7-3 win over second placed Pegasus D which cost them their unbeaten record. Alex Hadcock joined Smith-Dye with a maximum against Gt Horkesley E as the Grammar School team won 8-2. Pegasus were however, more successful at home to Lawford D winning by the proverbial mile 10-0. St Mary’s E are third despite being held to a 5-5 draw at Lawford C with no player going through the evening without defeat.

H20 Rowhedge A continued their good work with a 9-1 demolition of potential Division One title rivals Rayne. Dave Cole returned for Rowhedge as he and Kevin Gowlett both went through the evening unbeaten. St Mary’s A are the surprise package as they maintained their unbeaten record winning 6-4 at Walton A. Gary Young was the hero winning all four of his encounters in the maximum five sets. Their ‘B’ team however, have not fared so well and they completed a third straight loss at home to Walton B. Once again they didn’t go down without a fight as Peter Brownlie only just missed out on his first maximum in the top flight, losing 14-12 to John Hobson in the fifth end. No Walton player won their three either as they consolidated their place in mid-table.

Division Two is the closest of the four divisions with just thirteen points separating top to bottom. H20 Rowhedge D are lead by one point from Walton C. This week they accounted for third placed St Mary’s C 6-4 despite a fine hat-trick of wins by Martin Edwards for the West Bergholt team. Walton had no problems beating St Peters 9-1, Hazel Hume winning a consolation point against Jason Gale for the telecom team. Anchor Press recorded their first win, 6-4 in a local derby against Tollesbury A. Roger Warren was the main man winning all his singles whilst the Tollesbury trio won one apiece.

Final Essex junior rankings were announced this week with the H20 Rowhedge quartet of Greg Green, Mike Shore , Lawrence Wilcox and Jon Ward finishing 7th, 8th, 16th and 22nd respectively at Under 18 level. Green will represent Essex in the second team with Lawrence Wilcox making the fourth team. Holly Stubbings also of H20 Rowhedge is ranked second despite winning the Girls under 18 trial as Sara Wang is ranked higher nationally. However, this should still mean Holly will be selected to play for the Essex First team in the Premier division.
